Drop in freight and passenger volumes reflect economic slowdown - SA Statistics

The number of passengers and volumes of freight carried on South Africa’s roads and rail network have been eroded by the current economic slowdown. According to preliminary Land Transport Survey figures released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) yesterday, income from road and rail freight dropped 3.3% from R4.6 billion in February 2008 down to R4.4 billion in February 2009.
The survey covers both passenger and freight transport for the first time and succeeds the old Land Freight Transport Survey which used to monitor freight transportation only.
